Best Place to Dine in Zamboanga City: Dennis Coffee Garden
When in Zamboanga City, Dennis Coffee Garden is the perfect spot to enjoy authentic and affordable Tausug pastries, dishes, and coffee. It focuses not only on the food and flavors but also on providing its guests with a genuine Tausug hospitality experience.
Originally known as Omar’s Place, Dennis Coffee Garden was established in Jolo, Sulu. The cafe initially gained recognition for serving Kahawa Sug, the native Sulu coffee. Since its inception in 1962, the cafe has been committed to promoting sustainability, empowering youth and women, and fostering inclusivity, making it a worthy establishment to support.
A Welcoming Atmosphere
We visited the Dennis Coffee Garden branch on San Jose Road for lunch. They also have branches in KCC Mall de Zamboanga, Yubenco in Tetuan, and Southern Heights in La Paz.
The branch we visited resembles a house, with a spacious reception area featuring high ceilings where we were greeted by the friendly staff. Their warmth immediately conveyed that everyone is truly welcome at the restaurant, whether they are seeking a satisfying meal or an adventurous culinary experience.
The entire restaurant is adorned with locally crafted displays and beautiful paintings. As the branch is quite spacious, we were given the option to choose our seating, with a second floor, air-conditioned area downstairs, and outdoor seating with plants and vibrant ceiling decor.
Discovering Tausug Cuisine
For lunch, we ordered Beef Kulma and Chicken Pianggang, two of the most popular dishes on the menu.
In some parts of Mindanao, Beef Kulma is also referred to as Kurma, which is essentially a beef curry stew. It comprises tender beef cubes in a flavorful sauce made with tomato sauce, peanuts, curry, and coconut milk. It’s a complex dish with a delightful Tausug twist that will surprise even devoted curry enthusiasts.
Another standout dish is the intriguing Chicken Pianggang, also known as Blackened Coconut Grilled Chicken. For those unfamiliar with this delectable offering, imagine Chicken Inasal or barbecue prepared in burnt coconut milk curry, flavored with lemongrass, ginger, onion, and chilies.
Of course, we couldn’t miss out on Dennis Coffee Garden’s specialty – a piping hot cup of Kahawa Sug paired with various Tausug delicacies, available from as low as P80 each. If you’re having trouble deciding, consider the Bangbang Sug bundle, which allows you to sample a variety of offerings while also including three cups of native coffee.
Among the treats, my personal favorites were Biyaki, steamed grated sweet corn wrapped in corn husks, and Pitis, glutinous rice flour with sweet coconut wrapped in banana leaves. Additionally, Satti Ayam (skewered chicken in sauce), Daral (crepe with sweet coconut filling), and Pastil are delightful options to enjoy.
With its bold flavors influenced by Malay, Arab, and Spanish traditions, Dennis Coffee Garden is a must-visit for travelers seeking an authentic Tausug culinary experience.
